Anne F. Thurston is an internationally recognized author on Chinese affairs and politics. She has received a number of prestigious fellowships and grants, including the MacArthur Grant, Woodrow Wilson Center Fellowship, National Endowment for the Humanities grant, and others, Since receiving her doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, she taught at Fordham University from 1974 to 1980 and served as a research associate at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard and as a staff associate at the Social Science Research Council.

In addition to The Private Life of Chairman Mao, Dr. Thurston has written A Chinese Odyssey: The Life and Times of a Chinese Dissident (1991) and Enemies of the People: The Ordeal of Chinese Intellectuals during the Cultural Revolution (1987; 1988) and is co-author on a number of other works.
