South China Sea or the Western Philippine Sea?

In this first of a series of topics on China’s neighboring countries, Professors Aquino and Fred Magdalena will discuss the basic issues involved in the Philippine-China affair, and introduce the “political” dimensions of the issue after a presentation of the “facts” as can be best gathered so far on the Scarborough Shoal (near the Mindanao-Sulu perimeter) issue with China. They will also briefly discuss the role of the U.S., ASEAN and the other forces not directly involved in the issue.

Dr. Lindy Aquino is Professor Emeritus at the School of Pacific and Asian Studies UHM and retired Professor of Political Science and Asian Studies and Director of the Center for Philippine Studies UHM. She has a Ph.D. in Government (Political Science) from Cornell University.   Dr. Fred Magdalena is a faculty specialist at the Center for Philippine Studies UHM and currently Associate Director of the Center. He has a Ph.D. in Sociology from UHM.
