A Chinese Artist Looks at His Own Work: “Why Do I Paint the Way I Do?”

Liu Dan was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, in 1953. From the age of six he began training himself in classical Western drawing. From 1968 to 1978 he was the principle student of Ya Ming and from 1978 to 1981 he was a Fellow in the Jiangsu Province Academy of Chinese Painting. In 1979 he studied and painted at the Dunhuang caves. Since 1981 he has worked as an artist in Honolulu and has had shows in Honolulu, Taipei, Hong Kong and Seattle.
