Art of the Moment: Contemporary Chinese Art and Artists

Author of numerous essays on the history of Chinese art from the tenth to the twentieth century, Hsingyuan Tsao holds a B.A. in sculpture from the National Academy of Arts, China (1982), an M.A. in art history from the Central Institute of Fine Arts, China (1988), an M.A. in Asian studies from the University of California, Berkeley (1991), and a Ph.D. in art history from Stanford University (1996). Among Dr. Tsao’s curated exhibitions (catalogues bearing same titles) were: Three Generations: Women Printmakers from China, Portland, Oregon (1996) and Differences Preserved: Reconstruction of Tombs from the Song and Liao Dynasties, Portland, Oregon (2000).

The True Vision and an Ideal Society: Qingming Shanghe Tu Revisited

For the last China Seminar of 2000 please come for a rendition of the Qingming Shanghe tu, a twelfth-century hand scroll celebrated for its depiction of life and festival along the river. Dr. Hsingyuan Tsao, who recently joined the Department of Art at the University of Hawaii, will present this revisit.
